head-no-head-blackSM.jpgWe were there.

Tonight I got an invite to the big announcement from Emotiv, and what I saw blew my mind!

Let's say you want to pick up a rock in a game. You train this thing to know what the "I want to pick up a rock" thought process 'looks' like. Then, when you think about it, your character does it.

This is either the greatest thing to hit ever video gaming, or a huge disappointment. But based on the reaction in the room, I think this is for real!

How much would you be willing to pay for something that reads your mind? $1000? too high! $500? Nope, still too high. They are Tan001.jpggoing to sell this thing for $299, so start saving your pennies, boys and girls! It should be available by Christmas 2008.

Here are some images, and if all goes well, I will get a chance to use this thing Wednesday!

1. UI Implications
The UI implications for this thingie are reeeely interesting.

I've been following the brain-computer interface developments since the University of Berlin demonstrated a similar device at CEBIT a few years ago. Here in Boston, Mass. Gen. Hosp. did a year-long project with a quadriplegic. He played pong using a device like this. There's similar work being done out in Buffalo.

The price on the Emotiv unit makes it possible for a small company like ours to at least consider making our games brain accessible.

But, the UI design will be interesting.
